rcia - Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is a rite of welcome, beginning and reconnection. The R.C. I.A. process is designed to facilitate each person's unique experience of God's love and call in their lives. It is a faith journey encompassing the whole parish community that renews us in mind, heart, and spirit. The journey is guided by members of the parish who live by the Gospel of Jesus. It is also a personal journey in which the candidates look at their own relationship with God. As the newcomers discover Christ, their enthusiasm can transform the whole parish. The Church's response is to pray with and for the individuals going through this process and to be signs of God's presence.
The Rite is designed for
- Those who have never been baptized.
- Catholics who have been baptized, but have not received the other sacraments of initiation: Confirmation or Eucharist.
- Catholics who have strayed from their faith, but would like to be reconnected.
- Persons who would like to come into full communion with the Catholic Church.
The Rite consists of four stages
- The Pre-Catechumenate Period
- The Catechumenate Period
- The Period of Purification and Enlightenment
- The Mystagogia Period
Depending on each person's particular situation, the process can take from several months to one or two years.
